How to search files by date in Windows 10 in just a few steps
You can search for a file on your computer by date using commands with your computer's keyboard or mouse. We will explain the first method, for both, you have to position yourself in the file explorer.
To do this via commands, start by typing in the search bar at the top right of the screen: modification date: date1 .. date2. This way you can search for files by date range. Also, you can add some Boolean operators (we will explain more about what they are discussed first). You can also write a single date.
The most practical method, however, is to do it using the mouse. To get started, click on the "Search Tools" tab located in the part of the screen and on "Refine".
The options menu will open " Date of modification ”And you can choose from the following values: today, yesterday, this week, this month, last month and so on. You have to choose one.
If you want to search based on a specific date, click the search field in the upper right corner of the screen. A calendar will open. Search and click on the date you want.
In case you want to choose a date range, press the “Shift” key before clicking on the first date and hold it down until you find and click on the second.
How can I find a file in Windows 10?
If you have a Windows 10 operating system on your computer, you can search by several parameters, as it uses Microsoft's Query Syntax technology.
There are Boolean operators that allow you to specify what you want to add or remove in your search. They are:

- Quotation marks. To combine multiple phrases or keywords in the same order.
- Brackets. To match keywords or phrases in any order.
Besides these, there are specific filters you have available from the tools tab at the top of the screen. They are used by typing: filter name +: + its value. They are:
- Date. Returns results based on modification or creation date. You can search by specific date or by day range.
- Modified. It works as above, but takes into account only the creation date.
- Created. In this case, it only takes into account the creation date of the file.
- Cut it. You can choose the following values: blank, tiny, small, medium, large, huge or manually write the exact size in case you know it.
- Class. Search by file type. Example: calendar, picture, video, folder, game, contact, document, etc.
- Ext. To search only for certain extensions. Example: " ext.:jpg ”, It will search for images with JPG format.
- File. The search is performed within a specific folder.
- File. The search is by file name only.
Different types of filters
There are other types of file-specific filters that rely on metadata included in documents and photos and that you can use for your research are the following:
- Slides: presentations with one series of specific sheets.
- Comment. Word documents that include the comment you quote.
- Artist. For songs that have the specified artist name.
- Album. Returns the results with the name of the album you wrote.
- Trace. Filter songs by track number.
- Genre. It will return the results for genre of music.
- Duration. For songs and videos. You can write values like: short, long, medium, very long or the exact duration in case you know it.
- Year. Valid for films or songs, search by year of publication.
- Orientation. It is used for photos.
- Length. Please mention the exact width of the image.
- Tall. Please mention the exact height of the image.
