How to reset an AirTag so someone else can use it use

When you set up an AirTag, it's automatically associated with your Apple ID, meaning no one will be able to use it unless you unlink your Apple ID.

Restarting it is as simple as removing the AirTag from your Apple ID‌, following these steps:

    1. Open the Search app.
    2. Touch the AirTag you want to delete by selecting its name from the list.
    3. Swipe up to access AirTag settings.
    4. Tap "Delete"
    5. Tap “Delete” and confirm that you want to delete it in the floating window that will appear.

When finished, the backed AirTag is removed and you can give it to someone else to set it up as your own.

Unfortunately, if you're out of Bluetooth range of your AirTag when you remove it from your account, it won't register it and you'll need to do a manual reset. If you receive an AirTag from someone and they tell you it's associated with their ID, but that person has already removed it from their account, follow these steps to manually reset the AirTag:

    1. Press on the stainless steel back of the AirTag.
    2. While pressing, turn counterclockwise until the cap stops rotating.
    3. Separate the two parts of the AirTag.
    4. Take out the battery.
    5. Replace the battery.
    6. Press and hold the battery until it beeps.
    7. When the sound stops, repeat the process four more times, removing and inserting the battery and then pressing the battery until you hear the sound.

You must hear the beep five times to make sure the AirTag has been reset. When the process is complete, replace the AirTag lid and align the tabs on the lid with the three notches on the AirTag.

Press the cap down until you hear a sound and turn the cap clockwise until it locks.

To avoid having to do this tedious physical reset, it's best to make sure the person who provided you with the AirTag removed it from their account in the correct way while they have it within Bluetooth range, because it's an easier process to disconnect.
