How to send large files via WhatsApp

We often use WhatsApp as a platform to share photos, music and video clips with our contacts who live in different regions. But these media files they are compressed before being uploaded to the WhatsApp servers, Then their original quality is lost.

In a recent article, we have mentioned a workaround where you can share images, audio and video clips in full quality on WhatsApp.

But even high-quality media files are often large. A 5-minute FLAC audio file is between 40 and 60 MB, while an average music video at 720p resolution is between 70 and 90 MB. WhatsApp has a general upload limit of 16MB for any type of media file (photos, music or videos).

Probably the only high-quality media files you can share within that limit are average 3-minute MP5 files with a bit rate of 320 kbps.

So, in fact, the ability to send high-quality media files on WhatsApp is not very useful unless we manage to exceed the 16MB upload limit. And the good news is that you can actually share files larger than 16MB on WhatsApp.

Note: The following method only works with the iOS version of WhatsApp (Sender). Rather, the recipient can use WhatsApp on any platform (iOS, Android, Windows).

Send large photos, music and videos via WhatsApp

The method used here is the same as mentioned in our previous article, which helped bypass WhatsApp's media compression algorithms. When you share a document on WhatsApp, it allows you to collect files up to 128MB in size.

Of course, this size limit is not enough to share an HD quality movie (who does it anyway?), but you can easily share high-quality video or music files on WhatsApp using the method described below..

As with document uploads, WhatsApp allows you to choose files from other third-party applications that implement the Document Provider extension.

We used Docs as a third-party file picker app. The following steps show you how to share large photos, music and videos on WhatsApp using the Docs app.

  1. Download and install the app Documents  from the App Store.
  2. Import the large file (less than 128 MB) that you want to share on WhatsApp, in the Documents app file storage, via the Share menu, iTunes, or any other suitable means.
  3. Open WhatsApp and select the conversation where you want to share the file.
  4. Touch the icon ' + ' next to the conversation bubble and select Document.
  5. You should now see a list of apps that implement the Document Provider extension, which should include the Documents app. If not, tap "More…" at the bottom of the list and make sure the toggle next to the Docs app is turned on.
  6. Select the Documents app from the list of third-party apps and choose the desired file from the in-app storage.
  7. Once the file is selected, tap OK on the confirmation message.

The selected file will now be uploaded to WhatsApp, available for the recipient to download regardless of which platform it is on. File size must be less than 128MB.
