Which is better, Google Chrome or Safari

For almost all cases, those users who want to surf the Internet without penalizing the performance of their machine, it is better to use Safari, Apple's browser.

A new report shows that Chrome's situation regarding RAM management hasn't changed and continues to show an insatiable appetite.

Which is better, Google Chrome or Safari

In an article on his blog, Flotato developer Morten Just taken over by iMore tried to find out how much memory Chrome was consuming compared to Safari. It ran two tests, one with the lowest possible load and the other in a more realistic environment.

A virtual machine was set up with a clean install of macOS and browsers had to open two tabs showing Twitter and Gmail. One was conducted on a snapshot of memory and CPU usage 250 times per second, using psrecord.

In the minimum load test, the average RAM used by Chrome for the Twitter card alone was 730 megabytes, ten times higher than the 73 megabytes used by Safari. Flotato, an app for loading mobile versions of web pages as apps on macOS, reduces RAM usage by up to 63MB.

In the two-tab test, Chrome's memory usage hit 1 gigabyte after one minute, while Safari was consistently under 80 megabytes.

Instead of a virtual machine, the second test used developer Just's standard operating system and opened 54 tabs in each browser. While Safari kept the amount of RAM used per card on average at 12 megabytes, Chrome's average RAM usage was (no less) 290 megabytes per card.

Conclusion, if you have a computer that does not have an abundant amount of RAM, or if you use a lot of applications at the same time that have to perform RAM-consuming tasks, it is better not to use Chrome and enjoy the speed and moderate consumption of Safari Resources.

And then there is Firefox… poor Firefox
