How to change the thermal paste of my PC's processor? Step by step

Why is it necessary to change the thermal paste?

Once you know what the microprocessor is and what it is for, it is essential to pay attention to the thermal paste that has been applied to this component. Thermal paste is an element designed for speed up the transmission of heat between heatsink and processor, helping to keep temperatures under control.

Despite this, with the passage of time the thermal paste tends to dry out, causing it to gradually lose its qualities to adequately transmit the temperature. That said, it is crucial replace it with a new thermal paste, a process that we will teach you below.

How to change the thermal paste of my PC's processor? Step by step

The process of changing the computer thermal paste is quite simple, you just need to take a few aspects into consideration. Also, make sure you have a screwdriver, thermal paste, cloth / cloth and alcohol to start the process.

Remove the heat sink

The processor heatsink and fan are the ones that, as the name indicates, will dissipate all the heat from the CPU. It's a key piece, as without it the CPU would get too hot and just wouldn't work.

Similarly, as we mentioned before, over time it is necessary to change the thermal paste, the first step to follow for this process is remove this heatsink. This process is simple, assuming you have a common heat sink.

In most cases, heatsinks have four screws, all you have to do is unscrew them carefully, after which you should be able to remove them without any problem.

Likewise, you have to disconnect the heatsink from the motherboard, to be able to clean it later, as you can see in our guide.

Remove the processor from the motherboard socket

This is the process that terrifies most newbies, however if done correctly it shouldn't be a problem. Removal of the CPU it is usually quite simple, as in most cases regardless of the manufacturer (Intel or AMD) the procedure is similar.

You will find a small lever that hooks onto the motherboard, you just have to press it down lightly and of course it will give way and you can lift it. As you can see, after this the compartment in which the processor is located will rise, with which you can now remove it.

You have to be very careful with the pins, which depending on the brand of the processor will be found either on the motherboard or on the CPU itself. Do not touch them and do not force them at all.

Remove the old thermal paste

Before inserting a new thermal paste into your processor, you will need to remove traces of the old one. You can do this by using a piece of cloth lightly moistened with denatured alcohol.

Use the cloth and gradually remove traces of thermal paste from the processor, do it until there is nothing left. Keep in mind that this process must also be done on the heatsink.

Put the processor back on the motherboard

Once the processor is cleaned, put it back inside the motherboard, be sure to put it back in its correct position, guided by the guides present both on the motherboard and on the CPU itself, finally fix the processor again.

Apply the new thermal paste to the processor and reassemble the heatsink

It's time to apply the thermal paste, you can apply it as you wish, that is, using your fingers, with a screwdriver, with paper, etc. The important thing is that you apply the amount necessary to obtain a good dissipation.

Don't overdo it, with two small dots of just over half a centimeter should be enough for most cases, it is not recommended to put too much thermal paste.

Once the thermal paste has been applied, carefully place the heatsink in its final position e screw till a when it is not perfectly positioned. Similarly, reconnect it to the motherboard, after which you will have finished the whole process. Make sure you activate all processor cores from Windows to expand your PC's performance.
