Apple breathes new life into Parallels

The abandonment of Intel's “standard” architecture in favor of its own development brings a new promise of performance, energy efficiency and functionality that go beyond what it could offer until now.

The integration of all your chips in a common architecture (creating a System on a Chip (SoC, for the acronym) will allow you to accumulate all the experience you have acquired in the development of the iPhone hardware and the iPad at the same time software optimizations for the operating system can be integrated with a single development.

However, all progress has its sacrifices and users will lose the ability to boot their Macs to use Windows, which is allowed by the use of Intel architecture.

Millions of people enjoy the security and reliability of an Apple computer every day, but they need to use applications that don't exist for this platform. And for this they have to resort to using virtual machines that allow them to log in without having to alter their workflow.

At the WWDC keynote, where the transition began, Apple included a demonstration in which the Parallels Desktop virtual machine software allowed a Linux (Debian) distribution to be used within the Mac itself.

It is still unclear whether these virtual machines, which need to be programmed for Apple's new architecture, will be able to use Windows within the same macOS, although Microsoft has already developed a version of Windows X that runs on ARM as well, at least , what version of Windows is potentially usable.

What seems to be discarded are older (and still very popular) versions such as Windows 95 or Windows 98. Those programs that require these operating systems to run are very likely not going to be used on Macs with Apple's new architecture.

Parallels says in its statement:

Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) showcased many innovations, including a demo that contains a prototype of a future version of Parallels Desktop for Mac running on an Apple-based Mac.

“Parallels is proud to work closely with Apple during this exciting transition and we look forward to rolling out support for future Macs using Apple chips,” said Nick Dobrovolskiy, Parallels Senior Vice President of Engineering and Customer Service.

“Parallels brings more than a decade of cross-platform solutions, seamlessly integrating operating systems and functionality, to our work with Apple,” adds Dobrovolskiy. Our award-winning Parallels Desktop for Mac solution makes it easy for businesses and individuals to use applications and files from any operating system they need on their Macs. "

We look forward to sharing more information on Parallels Desktop for Mac support with Apple chips in the future.

All Mac users will enjoy a 25% discount on Parallels Desktop 15 for Mac, which allows them to easily run Windows and Mac applications at the same time on the same computer.

Parallels has announced a 25% discount offer for Mac users who purchase or upgrade to Parallels ® Desktop 15 for Mac via parallels.com/desktop by July 2 at 8:59 am (CEST). Parallels Desktop, the industry-leading software for running Windows applications on Mac, also includes free one-year subscriptions for Parallels Toolbox (parallels.com/toolbox) and Parallels Access ™ (parallels.com/access).

The Parallels Desktop 15 installation wizard makes running Windows on your Mac just a couple of clicks, no matter what you're doing: transferring your Windows PC, applications and files to your Mac, downloading and installing a copy of the free trial of Windows 10 directly from Microsoft to your Mac, buy Windows 10 Home or Pro Edition and automatically install it on your Mac, or import an existing installation of Windows, Linux or Boot Camp. It also gives you the ability to make Windows look like a Mac thanks to Coherence ™ mode, which makes Windows invisible while all applications on this system are still available via a Start menu, in the Dock, in the Launch Pad or on the desktop. It can also feel like a Windows PC in full-screen mode, with macOS and its apps at your fingertips with the swipe of a finger.

Parallels Desktop 15 supports Apple Metal API and DirectX 11, 10 and 9 in Metal, allowing you to enjoy the best graphics performance. This allows customers to run resource-intensive Windows programs, such as computer-aided design or manufacturing applications and games, which were not available in previous versions.

Integrations with macOS Catalina include improved Sidecard support and tilt and double-tap processing on Apple Pencil. These gestures can be used in programs such as CorelDRAW and Microsoft SketchPad. Apple Home is now available in Parallels Desktop, providing users with a consistent and reliable sign-in experience. It will also save them from having to remember multiple accounts and passwords.

VMWare joins Apple's Chip Architecture Initiative

On the other hand VMware, the other virtualization company, which sells VMware Fusion on Mac, also announced a "technical preview" in early July, without further details, although the way to do it - via Twitter - and the wording, asking developers "" Why should you use VMware Fusion on an Apple chip Mac? " does not seem to bring great confidence in the development of the solution.
