Apple acquires artificial intelligence company Xnor

Seattle-based Xnor.ai is a three-year-old startup specializing in low-power artificial intelligence using edge computing.

The technologies developed by the company can be used in devices such as smartphones, Internet of Things (IoT) products, cameras, drones, and even low-power mobile CPUs.

The name "Edge computing" loosely translates to processing at the end (ie, on the device), as opposed to "core computing" or processing in the data center: the cloud.

Xnor's slogan is “AI everywhere, for everyone”, something they have achieved through machine learning and image recognition tools that can be used on the device itself, rather than having to send requests to the cloud.

Edge computing seeks to take data storage and most basic computing tasks out of the cloud, thereby increasing responsiveness and saving bandwidth, making it more secure in the process.

In addition, Xnor.ai has also created a self-service platform to facilitate the integration of code dedicated to artificial intelligence and data libraries into apps created by developers.

The utility for Apple, knowing its emphasis on privacy, its commitment to artificial intelligence and the power of its devices, far ahead of what the Android platform offers, is obvious.

Apple is said to have paid $ 200 million for the company. Apple has already bought several companies specializing in artificial intelligence.
